Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Balloon Flower (Platycodon grandiflorus) has a long history of use in traditional East Asian medicine, particularly within Chinese and Korean herbal systems. Its root, known as Jie Geng in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is commonly prescribed for respiratory conditions such as cough, bronchitis, and throat inflammation. The rationale for its use in allergies, specifically respiratory allergies, is largely extrapolated from its traditional application for general respiratory tract ailments rather than specific references to allergic rhinitis or asthma. Balloon Flower root is believed to help "open up" the lungs, resolve phlegm, and relieve symptoms associated with respiratory tract blockages, which can overlap with symptoms of allergies. While several in vitro and animal studies have explored the anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects of compounds found in Balloon Flower root (such as saponins and platycodin D), direct clinical evidence in humans for treating respiratory allergies is limited. Most human studies focus on broader respiratory symptoms, not allergy-specific endpoints. Therefore, its use for respiratory allergies is primarily justified by tradition, with modest supportive evidence from preclinical research but insufficient high-quality clinical trials to firmly validate its efficacy for this specific indication.
