Rating (out of 5): 2

Beta glucans are naturally occurring polysaccharides found in the cell walls of cereals, bacteria, and fungi. They are known for their immunomodulatory effects, which has led to research into their potential role in supporting or treating respiratory allergies such as allergic rhinitis or asthma. Several animal studies and a limited number of human clinical trials suggest that beta glucans may help modulate immune responses, reduce inflammation, and potentially decrease the severity of allergic symptoms. For example, some studies have shown that beta glucan supplementation can reduce airway hyperresponsiveness and eosinophilic inflammation in animal models of asthma. Small human trials have indicated possible benefits in lowering symptom severity and improving quality of life in individuals with allergic rhinitis. The mechanisms proposed include shifting the immune response away from a Th2-dominated (allergy-promoting) state, enhancing innate immune activity, and modulating cytokine production. However, the overall quality of evidence remains modest, with limited sample sizes, inconsistency in beta glucan sources and dosages, and a lack of large, well-controlled trials. As a result, while there is a plausible scientific basis and some preliminary supportive data, beta glucans cannot yet be considered a proven or primary treatment for respiratory allergies.
