Rating (out of 5): 2

Bidens pilosa, also known as Spanish needle, has a documented history of use in traditional medicine for various ailments, including respiratory allergies. However, there is also some emerging scientific evidence supporting its potential efficacy for allergic respiratory conditions. Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that extracts of Bidens pilosa possess anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. For example, research published in the journal Phytomedicine (2010) showed that Bidens pilosa extracts inhibited the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and reduced histamine release in cell models. Another study in Journal of Ethnopharmacology (2012) found that Bidens pilosa reduced allergic airway inflammation and IgE production in a mouse model of asthma.

Despite these promising findings, clinical trials in humans evaluating the effect of Bidens pilosa on respiratory allergies are lacking. Most of the available evidence comes from laboratory and animal studies, so the overall quality and applicability of the evidence are limited. Traditional use does provide some support, but the primary justification for its use in allergies—especially respiratory allergies—rests on preliminary scientific findings rather than robust clinical validation. Therefore, while Bidens pilosa may have potential as a supportive treatment for respiratory allergies, more rigorous human studies are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety.
