Evidence supporting the use of: Bifidobacteria
For the health condition: Allergies (respiratory)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bifidobacteria, a genus of beneficial gut bacteria commonly used as probiotics, has been studied for its potential role in supporting or treating respiratory allergies such as allergic rhinitis and asthma. The underlying hypothesis is that modulation of the gut microbiota can influence immune system responses, including those linked to allergic diseases. Some clinical studies and animal experiments suggest that supplementation with certain strains of Bifidobacteria may help modulate immune responses, shift the Th1/Th2 balance, and reduce markers of allergy or inflammation. For example, randomized controlled trials have shown that Bifidobacterium longum or Bifidobacterium breve supplementation in children with allergic rhinitis or asthma can lead to modest improvements in symptoms or reductions in medication use. However, results are inconsistent across studies, and systematic reviews and meta-analyses generally conclude that while there may be a slight benefit, the evidence is of low to moderate quality and is not sufficient to recommend routine use for respiratory allergies. The effects appear to be strain-specific and may depend on timing, dosage, and individual patient factors. In summary, while there is some scientific evidence supporting the use of Bifidobacteria for respiratory allergy management, it is limited and not definitive.
