Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 2

Bifidobacteria, a genus of beneficial probiotics commonly found in the human gut, have been investigated for their potential role in alleviating respiratory allergies, such as allergic rhinitis and asthma. The current scientific evidence is limited but growing. Several small-scale randomized controlled trials and animal studies suggest that supplementation with certain Bifidobacteria strains may help modulate the immune system, shifting the balance away from Th2-driven allergic responses by promoting regulatory T-cell activity and increasing the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines. Some studies have shown that children and adults taking Bifidobacteria-containing probiotics experienced reduced symptoms of allergic rhinitis during pollen seasons, and a few have noted improvements in asthma-related markers.

However, these effects are strain-specific and not all Bifidobacteria species or products have demonstrated benefits. The mechanisms remain under investigation, and meta-analyses note high heterogeneity among studies, with only modest clinical effects overall. Major guidelines do not currently recommend probiotics, including Bifidobacteria, as standard treatment for respiratory allergies. Thus, while there is some scientific basis for Bifidobacteria’s use in this context, the evidence is preliminary and not definitive. Further large-scale, well-controlled human studies are needed to clarify their therapeutic role.
