Bifidobacterium longum is a probiotic bacterium that has been studied for its potential role in modulating immune responses, including those relevant to respiratory allergies such as allergic rhinitis and asthma. The rationale for its use is based on the gut-lung axis, an emerging concept that highlights interactions between the gut microbiome and respiratory immune functions. Several preclinical studies (in vitro and animal models) suggest that B. longum can influence immune cell activity, promote anti-inflammatory cytokine production, and strengthen the epithelial barrier, possibly leading to reduced allergic responses. Some small-scale human clinical trials and randomized controlled trials have also explored the effects of B. longum supplementation in people with allergic rhinitis or asthma. Results have shown that certain strains of B. longum may reduce symptom severity, decrease IgE levels, and improve overall quality of life in affected individuals. However, the overall body of evidence is still limited by small sample sizes, strain-specific effects, and variability in study design. As such, while there is a biological basis and some early clinical evidence supporting the use of B. longum for respiratory allergies, more robust, large-scale human trials are needed before it can be widely recommended. Currently, its use is best considered as a complementary approach rather than a primary therapy.
