Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bifidobacterium species, a group of probiotic bacteria commonly found in the human gut, have been studied for their potential role in modulating immune responses and supporting the management of respiratory allergies, such as allergic rhinitis and asthma. The scientific rationale is based on the "hygiene hypothesis" and the ability of certain probiotics to influence the balance of Th1/Th2 immune responses, potentially decreasing allergic inflammation. Several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and systematic reviews have investigated the effects of Bifidobacterium-containing probiotic supplements in children and adults with allergic rhinitis. Some studies report modest reductions in symptom severity and improvements in quality of life; for instance, Bifidobacterium longum and Bifidobacterium breve have been associated with reduced nasal symptoms in small trials. However, the overall quality of evidence is low to moderate, with some studies failing to demonstrate significant benefit and considerable heterogeneity in probiotic strains, dosages, and study populations. Major clinical guidelines do not currently recommend probiotics as a standard treatment for respiratory allergies. Thus, while there is some scientific evidence suggesting a potential benefit, it is inconsistent and not robust enough to warrant strong clinical recommendations.
