Rating (out of 5): 2

Boswellia, also known as Indian frankincense, is a resin extracted from trees of the genus Boswellia and has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for a range of inflammatory conditions, including respiratory issues such as asthma and bronchitis. The use of Boswellia for respiratory allergies is primarily grounded in this traditional context, where it has been valued for its supposed anti-inflammatory and anti-asthmatic properties. Some small clinical studies and preclinical research suggest that Boswellia's active components, particularly boswellic acids, may inhibit leukotriene synthesis, a pathway implicated in allergic and asthmatic responses. For example, a handful of limited trials have indicated that Boswellia extract may help reduce asthma symptoms and improve lung function, though these studies are typically small, short-term, and have methodological limitations. There is a lack of robust, high-quality research specifically addressing Boswellia's effects on allergic rhinitis or other non-asthmatic respiratory allergies. As such, while traditional use is well documented, scientific validation is limited and not yet conclusive for this indication. More rigorous clinical trials are needed to establish its efficacy and safety profile for treating respiratory allergies.
