Chinese Licorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis), commonly referred to as "Gan Cao" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has been traditionally used to address respiratory allergies and related symptoms. Its use is rooted in historical texts, where it is described as a harmonizing herb with the ability to "clear heat" and "detoxify," and is frequently included in formulas to soothe cough, reduce phlegm, and alleviate throat irritation. The herb is believed to exert anti-inflammatory and soothing effects on the respiratory tract, making it a common adjunct in herbal remedies for conditions like allergic rhinitis, asthma, and coughs.

From a scientific perspective, there is some preclinical evidence suggesting that glycyrrhizin, a key active compound in licorice, may modulate immune responses and reduce airway inflammation in animal models. Some in vitro studies indicate anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects, such as inhibition of histamine release from mast cells. However, rigorous clinical trials in humans specifically evaluating licorice's efficacy for respiratory allergies are lacking, and systematic reviews generally find insufficient high-quality evidence to support its clinical use for this indication. Thus, while traditional use is well-established, scientific validation remains limited and preliminary. Caution is also warranted due to potential side effects, especially with long-term or high-dose use, such as hypertension and hypokalemia.
