Evidence supporting the use of: Cineole
For the health condition: Allergies (respiratory)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Cineole (also known as eucalyptol) is a major component of eucalyptus oil and has been studied for its effects on respiratory conditions, including allergic rhinitis and other allergy-related respiratory symptoms. Several clinical studies have demonstrated that cineole possesses anti-inflammatory, mucolytic, and bronchodilatory properties. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in the journal Respiratory Medicine (2003) found that oral cineole reduced symptoms and improved nasal airflow in patients with rhinosinusitis, which often has allergic components. Additionally, preclinical studies indicate that cineole can inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and reduce eosinophil infiltration, mechanisms relevant to allergic reactions in the airways. A 2012 review in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine highlighted its ability to modulate immune responses and reduce inflammation in the respiratory tract. While most evidence focuses on broader respiratory disorders like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), some overlap exists, as these often have allergic triggers or components. Overall, the evidence supporting cineole’s role in managing allergy-related respiratory symptoms is moderate, with both experimental and some clinical data backing its use, but further high-quality, large-scale trials specifically targeting respiratory allergies are warranted to confirm efficacy.
