Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 1

Cistus, also known as rockrose, has a long history of traditional use in Mediterranean herbal medicine, primarily for its purported antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and immune-supporting properties. The plant is especially valued for its resin, labdanum, and its herbal infusions. In the context of allergies—particularly respiratory allergies such as hay fever—Cistus tea or extracts have been traditionally used in parts of Europe to soothe irritated mucous membranes, reduce inflammation, and support overall respiratory health. However, most of this use is based on anecdotal evidence and traditional herbal practices rather than systematic research.

Scientific evaluation of Cistus species (such as Cistus incanus or Cistus creticus) suggests potential antioxidant and mild anti-inflammatory properties, which theoretically could benefit allergic conditions. Nonetheless, clinical studies specifically investigating the effect of Cistus on respiratory allergies in humans are scarce or of low quality. Some in vitro and animal studies indicate that extracts of Cistus may modulate immune responses and reduce histamine release, but there is insufficient high-quality clinical evidence to support its efficacy for allergy treatment. Therefore, while Cistus is traditionally used for respiratory allergies, scientific validation remains weak, and its use for this purpose should be considered as complementary rather than evidence-based.
