Synopsis: Elder flower (Sambucus nigra) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe, for treating respiratory ailments such as colds, sinus congestion, and symptoms related to allergies (like hay fever). Folk medicine practitioners have historically used elder flower infusions and extracts as a diaphoretic (to induce sweating) and to soothe mucous membranes. The rationale for its use in allergies is based on its reputed anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and mild decongestant properties, which may provide symptomatic relief from allergic rhinitis.

However, scientific evidence specifically supporting elder flower for allergy treatment is limited. There are very few modern clinical trials examining elder flower’s efficacy in allergic conditions, and those that exist are usually small or of low methodological quality. Some pharmacological studies suggest elder flower extracts contain flavonoids and phenolic compounds with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity, which could theoretically help in modulating allergic responses, but direct evidence for allergy symptom reduction is lacking.

In summary, elder flower’s use for respiratory allergies is mainly justified by traditional use and anecdotal reports rather than robust scientific validation. More high-quality research would be needed to confirm its effectiveness for this indication.
