Flavonoids are a diverse group of plant compounds found in fruits, vegetables, tea, and other foods, and have been investigated for their potential effects on allergies, particularly respiratory allergies. The scientific rationale for their use is primarily based on their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Several flavonoids, such as quercetin, hesperidin, and catechins, have demonstrated the ability to inhibit histamine release from mast cells and modulate immune responses in in vitro and animal studies. For example, quercetin has been shown to suppress the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and stabilize cell membranes, which may reduce allergic symptoms.

However, while these mechanisms are promising, robust clinical evidence in humans is limited. Small clinical trials and observational studies suggest that flavonoid supplementation can reduce some symptoms of allergic rhinitis and asthma, but results are inconsistent, and most studies are of low methodological quality or use mixed flavonoid preparations, making it difficult to attribute effects to specific compounds. Furthermore, systematic reviews and meta-analyses generally conclude that more high-quality, large-scale clinical trials are needed before flavonoids can be recommended as a standard treatment for respiratory allergies. Thus, while there is a scientific basis for further exploration, current evidence supporting the use of flavonoid mixtures for respiratory allergies is preliminary and not yet conclusive.
