Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Kuding tea, derived from the leaves of Ilex kudingcha or Ligustrum robustum, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Traditionally, Kuding tea is consumed to "dispel wind-heat," "clear the head and eyes," and "alleviate toxins." In TCM theory, many respiratory allergies, such as hay fever or allergic rhinitis, are thought to result from "wind-heat" invasions or toxin accumulation, giving rise to symptoms like sneezing, congestion, and itchy eyes. Therefore, Kuding tea has sometimes been used to relieve these symptoms, although it is more commonly associated with general detoxification, fever reduction, and alleviation of sore throat or cough from respiratory infections, rather than specifically for allergic reactions. From a scientific perspective, there is limited evidence to support Kuding tea’s efficacy for respiratory allergies. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that Kuding tea has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which could theoretically help with allergic inflammation. However, no high-quality clinical trials have demonstrated effectiveness for allergic rhinitis or similar respiratory allergies in humans. As such, the traditional use exists, but scientific evidence is weak and indirect.
