Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Moisture, typically in the form of increased ambient humidity via humidifiers or steam inhalation, is scientifically supported as a supportive measure for respiratory allergies. Allergic rhinitis and other respiratory allergies often cause symptoms such as nasal congestion, throat irritation, and dry mucous membranes. Research indicates that maintaining optimal humidity levels (generally 40-60%) can help keep mucous membranes moist, thereby supporting the body’s natural defenses and improving mucociliary clearance. This can reduce irritation and make it easier to expel allergens and mucus from the airways. Clinical guidelines from organizations such as the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology suggest that humidified air may help alleviate discomfort from dry environments, although they caution against excessive humidity, which can promote mold growth and worsen allergies. While moisture does not treat the underlying immune response to allergens, it can provide symptomatic relief, especially in dry indoor environments. The evidence base consists of small clinical studies and expert consensus rather than large randomized controlled trials, so the overall evidence strength is moderate (rated 3/5). Moisture is thus a scientifically validated adjunct for symptom management in respiratory allergies, but not a primary treatment.
