Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Omega-3 fatty acids, primarily found in fish oil (EPA and DHA) and some plant sources (ALA), have been investigated for their potential role in modulating allergic diseases, including respiratory allergies such as allergic rhinitis and asthma. The scientific rationale is based on omega-3’s anti-inflammatory properties: they are precursors for the production of resolvins and protectins, which can suppress inflammatory responses. Several observational studies suggest that populations with higher omega-3 intake may have lower prevalence of allergic diseases. Some randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have examined the supplementation of omega-3s in individuals with respiratory allergies, with mixed results. A few studies in children and adults indicate a modest reduction in symptoms or markers of airway inflammation, but many others find no significant benefit. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses typically conclude that the evidence for omega-3 fatty acids in preventing or treating respiratory allergies is limited and inconsistent, though some potential exists, especially for early-life supplementation (e.g., during pregnancy or infancy) in reducing the risk of allergic sensitization. Overall, while the biological plausibility and early data are encouraging, current clinical evidence does not robustly support the use of omega-3 supplements as an effective treatment for respiratory allergies, and professional guidelines do not recommend them specifically for this purpose.
