Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Peppermint (Mentha × piperita) has traditionally been used in various cultures to help ease respiratory symptoms, such as those associated with allergies, colds, or sinus congestion. The aromatic oil, particularly its main component menthol, has historically been valued for its perceived ability to provide a sensation of improved airflow and to soothe irritated mucous membranes. Folk remedies have included peppermint teas, inhalations, and balms as supportive measures for respiratory discomfort. However, scientific evidence supporting peppermint as an effective treatment for respiratory allergies is limited. While menthol in peppermint oil can create a feeling of clearer nasal passages by activating cold-sensitive receptors, studies show this does not significantly improve objective measures of airflow or allergy symptoms. There are also no robust clinical trials demonstrating that peppermint or menthol fundamentally addresses the underlying immune response in allergic rhinitis or other allergic respiratory conditions. Overall, peppermint’s use for allergies remains primarily rooted in tradition and symptomatic relief, rather than in strong scientific validation or mechanistic research.
