Evidence supporting the use of: Platycodon root
For the health condition: Allergies (respiratory)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Platycodon root (Platycodon grandiflorus), also known as balloon flower root, has a long history of use in traditional East Asian medicine, particularly in Chinese and Korean herbal practices. It is commonly employed in formulas intended to address respiratory complaints such as cough, bronchitis, phlegm, and, by extension, symptoms associated with allergies affecting the respiratory tract. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) classifies platycodon root as an herb that "disperses lung Qi" and "eliminates phlegm," which makes it a popular choice for conditions involving respiratory inflammation and mucus, including those triggered by allergic responses.
While traditional use is well-documented, scientific evidence specifically supporting platycodon root for allergic respiratory conditions is limited. Preliminary laboratory studies have shown that certain saponins found in platycodon root may have anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, potentially reducing airway inflammation or allergic response in cell or animal models. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and no conclusive evidence demonstrates efficacy for treating respiratory allergies in people. Thus, the primary justification for its use in this context remains traditional rather than scientific. Overall, the evidence rating is 2, reflecting plausible mechanisms and strong traditional use, but insufficient high-quality scientific validation.
