Schizonepeta (Schizonepeta tenuifolia), also known as Jing Jie in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use in East Asian herbal medicine for treating symptoms associated with respiratory allergies, such as sneezing, runny nose, and itching. In TCM, Schizonepeta is classified as a dispersing herb that "releases the exterior," meaning it is believed to help expel external pathogens and alleviate symptoms of the common cold and allergic rhinitis. Traditional texts often recommend it in herbal formulas for wind-cold or wind-heat patterns, which include allergy-like symptoms.

Scientific evidence is limited; a few in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts of Schizonepeta may have anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, potentially inhibiting the release of histamine and other mediators involved in allergic responses. However, clinical trials in humans are scarce, and most evidence supporting its use for respiratory allergies remains anecdotal or based on traditional usage. Therefore, while Schizonepeta is widely used in traditional medicine for respiratory allergy support, robust scientific validation is lacking at this time, and its use is best understood in the context of traditional herbal practices rather than as an evidence-based intervention.
