Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Stereospermum suaveolens, commonly known as Patala, is an important plant in the traditional Ayurvedic system of medicine. It is one of the ten roots in the famous Dashamoola formulation, which is widely used for its anti-inflammatory and respiratory benefits. Classical Ayurvedic texts describe its use for treating respiratory conditions such as cough, asthma, and allergic disorders, often attributed to its expectorant and anti-allergic properties. However, while there are a few preclinical studies indicating anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of Stereospermum extracts, robust scientific validation for its specific use in allergy (particularly respiratory allergies) is limited. No high-quality clinical trials have been published directly evaluating its efficacy for allergic respiratory diseases. The majority of support for its use in allergies comes from its long-standing use in traditional medicine, historical formulations, and some animal studies suggesting immunomodulatory potential. Therefore, its use is best justified by tradition, with only preliminary scientific evidence available to date.
