Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitamin D has been investigated for its potential role in supporting or treating respiratory allergies, including allergic rhinitis and asthma. Scientific interest stems from vitamin D’s known immunomodulatory effects. It can influence both innate and adaptive immune responses, and deficiency has been associated with increased risk and severity of some allergic diseases.

Several observational studies have found that low serum vitamin D levels correlate with a higher prevalence and severity of allergic rhinitis and asthma. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining vitamin D supplementation for respiratory allergies have produced mixed results. Some studies report modest improvements in symptoms, decreased medication use, or reduced frequency of respiratory infections, while others find no significant benefit. Meta-analyses generally conclude that while vitamin D deficiency may be a risk factor for developing allergic conditions, supplementation has limited and inconsistent clinical benefit for established respiratory allergies. The evidence is somewhat stronger in populations with clear vitamin D deficiency and in the context of asthma rather than allergic rhinitis.

Overall, current scientific evidence does not robustly support the use of vitamin D as a primary treatment for respiratory allergies, but it may have adjunctive benefit, particularly in individuals who are deficient. More high-quality, large-scale RCTs are needed to clarify its therapeutic value in allergy management.
