Broccoli sprouts are not traditionally used for Alzheimer's disease, but there is emerging scientific interest due to their high content of sulforaphane, a bioactive compound with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Preclinical studies—primarily in vitro and animal models—suggest that sulforaphane may mitigate some underlying mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease, such as oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and amyloid-beta accumulation. For example, several rodent studies have demonstrated that sulforaphane administration leads to improved cognitive function, reduced amyloid plaques, and decreased markers of oxidative damage in Alzheimer’s models. Some mechanistic studies show sulforaphane activates the Nrf2 pathway, which is involved in cellular defense against oxidative stress, a key factor in neurodegenerative diseases.

However, human clinical evidence is lacking as of mid-2024. There are no large-scale, high-quality clinical trials that demonstrate broccoli sprouts or sulforaphane supplementation significantly benefits people with Alzheimer's disease. Most of the current evidence is limited to animal models or cell cultures, which may not translate directly to human outcomes. Thus, while scientific rationale and preliminary data exist, the strength of evidence is currently low (rated 2 out of 5), and the use of broccoli sprouts for Alzheimer's disease cannot be considered a validated or standard approach.
