Camellia sinensis, the plant source of green and black tea, has been studied for its potential benefits in neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's Disease (AD). The interest is primarily scientific, based on the presence of polyphenolic compounds—particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)—and their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-amyloidogenic properties. Experimental studies, including in vitro and animal models, have shown that tea polyphenols may inhibit the aggregation of beta-amyloid plaques, reduce neuronal oxidative stress, and modulate signaling pathways involved in neurodegeneration. Small-scale human observational studies have associated frequent tea consumption with a lower risk of cognitive decline; however, these studies are limited by confounding factors and do not establish causality. A few randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have investigated green tea extracts or EGCG in cognitive impairment or AD, but results are mixed and generally underpowered. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses (e.g., Panza et al., 2015; Mancini et al., 2017) conclude that while preclinical data are promising, there is insufficient high-quality clinical evidence to confirm efficacy for prevention or treatment of Alzheimer's Disease. Thus, the use of Camellia sinensis for AD is scientifically motivated but not yet strongly supported by clinical evidence, warranting a moderate-low evidence rating (2/5).
