Evidence supporting the use of: Cannabigerol
For the health condition: Alzheimer's Disease
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cannabigerol (CBG) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in the Cannabis sativa plant. Its potential application in supporting or treating Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is based on emerging, but preliminary, scientific evidence rather than traditional use. Unlike THC or CBD, CBG has not been historically used in folk or herbal medicine for neurodegenerative conditions. Recent preclinical studies have explored CBG's neuroprotective properties, largely using in vitro cell culture systems or animal models. For example, some research suggests that CBG may reduce neuroinflammation and oxidative stress, both of which are implicated in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's Disease. A 2018 study (Valdeolivas et al., Neurotherapeutics) reported that CBG may protect neurons from toxicity and support neurogenesis, although these findings have not yet been translated to human clinical trials. Moreover, there is some evidence that CBG can modulate the endocannabinoid system and may potentially impact pathways involved in amyloid plaque formation, but such effects remain speculative at this stage.
In summary, the scientific evidence supporting CBG's use for Alzheimer's Disease is limited to preclinical findings, with no robust clinical data in humans as of June 2024. There is no traditional history of use for this purpose. While the initial results are promising and justify further research, current evidence is not strong enough to recommend CBG as a treatment or supportive agent for Alzheimer's Disease outside of experimental settings.
