Carotenoids, including lutein, zeaxanthin, and beta-carotene, are antioxidant compounds found in various fruits and vegetables. Their potential benefit in Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is primarily based on their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may protect neural tissue from oxidative stress—a key contributor to neurodegeneration in AD.
Several observational studies have found that individuals with AD tend to have lower levels of certain carotenoids in their blood and brain tissue. Some small-scale human studies and animal models suggest that dietary carotenoids may slow cognitive decline or improve certain cognitive functions. For example, lutein and zeaxanthin supplementation has shown modest benefits in cognitive performance in elderly populations, though these findings are not specific or robust for AD patients.
However, large, well-controlled clinical trials specifically evaluating carotenoid supplementation for the treatment or prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease are lacking. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews generally conclude that, while there is a biological rationale and some supporting observational data, the clinical evidence is limited and inconclusive. Thus, carotenoids are not a standard treatment for AD, but ongoing research explores their preventive potential.
In summary, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary evidence for carotenoids in supporting cognitive health and possibly modifying the risk or progression of Alzheimer’s Disease, the strength of the evidence is low, and more rigorous studies are needed.
