Curcuma, especially in the form of Curcuma longa (turmeric), is used to support or treat Alzheimer’s Disease primarily based on scientific interest, though the evidence is limited and not yet conclusive. The main active compound in turmeric, curcumin, has demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-amyloid properties in preclinical studies. In vitro and animal studies suggest that curcumin may help reduce amyloid plaque accumulation, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation—key processes implicated in Alzheimer’s pathology.
However, clinical trials in humans have yielded mixed and generally disappointing results. Most studies report poor bioavailability of curcumin when taken orally, and no significant cognitive improvement has been consistently demonstrated in Alzheimer’s patients. Some small-scale trials report modest benefits on cognitive function or biomarkers, but these findings have not been replicated in larger, well-controlled studies.
While turmeric has a long history of use in traditional medicine for general cognitive and inflammatory conditions, its specific use for Alzheimer’s Disease is a more recent development driven by scientific research rather than long-standing tradition. Overall, while there is a scientific rationale and early-stage evidence, the current level of support is weak, and turmeric or curcumin is not considered a validated or standard treatment for Alzheimer’s Disease.
