Flavones, a class of polyphenolic compounds found in various plants (such as parsley, celery, and chamomile), have been studied for their potential neuroprotective effects, including their relevance to Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Scientific interest stems from their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-amyloidogenic properties observed in preclinical (cellular and animal) studies. Flavones like apigenin and luteolin have demonstrated the ability to reduce neuroinflammation, inhibit tau phosphorylation, and decrease beta-amyloid aggregation in animal models of AD. Some studies also suggest that flavones may modulate signaling pathways involved in neuronal survival and synaptic plasticity.
However, evidence from human clinical trials is very limited. Most available data are from basic research and a few small-scale human studies or epidemiological observations suggesting that higher flavonoid intake may correlate with a lower risk of cognitive decline. No large, well-controlled clinical trials have shown that flavones or flavone-rich extracts can prevent, treat, or reverse the symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease in humans. Therefore, while the scientific rationale exists and early-stage research is promising, the current evidence falls short of robust clinical validation. Flavones are not considered standard or primary therapy for Alzheimer's Disease, but they remain a focus of ongoing research.
