Evidence supporting the use of: Fungus
For the health condition: Alzheimer's Disease
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Several types of fungi, particularly medicinal mushrooms such as Hericium erinaceus (Lion's Mane), have been investigated for their potential to support or treat Alzheimer's Disease (AD). The scientific justification stems mainly from preclinical studies and a limited number of human trials. Lion's Mane contains compounds called hericenones and erinacines, which have been shown in laboratory and animal studies to stimulate the synthesis of nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein important for the survival and maintenance of neurons. Some small clinical studies have reported cognitive improvement in elderly adults with mild cognitive impairment following supplementation with Lion's Mane extract. However, these studies are generally small, of limited duration, and often lack robust controls.
Other fungi, such as Cordyceps and Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi), have also been studied for neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects, which could theoretically benefit AD patients. However, the evidence for these species is mainly limited to cell and animal models.
Currently, there is not enough high-quality clinical evidence to conclusively support the use of fungi as a treatment for Alzheimer's Disease. Most studies are preliminary, and large, well-controlled human trials are lacking. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and emerging evidence, the overall strength of support is modest (rated 2/5), and fungi should not be considered a substitute for evidence-based medical therapies for Alzheimer's Disease.
