Panax ginseng (Oriental ginseng) has a traditional history of use in East Asian medicine for enhancing cognitive function and vitality. In recent years, some scientific studies have investigated its potential benefits for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Preclinical research suggests that ginsenosides, the active compounds in ginseng, may exert neuroprotective effects, reduce oxidative stress, inhibit amyloid-beta aggregation, and modulate cholinergic neurotransmission—all mechanisms relevant to AD pathology.
Several small clinical trials have explored the effects of ginseng extracts in patients with Alzheimer's disease or mild cognitive impairment. Some of these studies report modest improvements in cognitive performance, particularly in memory and global cognitive scores, when compared to placebo. However, these trials often suffer from small sample sizes, short durations, and methodological limitations. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses generally conclude that while there is some evidence to suggest a potential benefit, the overall quality of evidence is low, and more rigorous, large-scale trials are needed to confirm efficacy and safety.
