Ketone salts have been investigated as a potential therapeutic intervention for Alzheimer's disease (AD), primarily due to their ability to elevate blood ketone bodies and provide an alternative energy source for the brain. In Alzheimer's disease, glucose metabolism in the brain is often impaired, which may contribute to cognitive decline. Ketone bodies—such as beta-hydroxybutyrate—can serve as an alternative fuel source for neurons. Several small-scale clinical studies and preclinical research have explored the effects of ketogenic interventions, including exogenous ketone supplements (such as ketone salts), in AD and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Some studies have shown modest improvements in cognitive performance in individuals with MCI or mild-to-moderate AD following supplementation with ketone bodies or adherence to a ketogenic diet. However, most clinical trials have focused on medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil or ketogenic diets rather than ketone salts specifically. Evidence directly supporting ketone salts is limited, and available studies are often small, short-term, and sometimes lack placebo controls. Overall, while there is a scientific rationale and some early evidence that increasing ketone availability may benefit brain function in Alzheimer's patients, the evidence base remains preliminary. Robust, large-scale, long-term clinical trials are lacking. Thus, the evidence supporting ketone salts as a treatment or support for Alzheimer's disease is currently limited, warranting a rating of 2 out of 5.
