Lycium, commonly known as goji berry or wolfberry, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where it is believed to nourish the liver and kidneys, improve eyesight, and promote longevity. In TCM, Lycium is sometimes included in formulations intended to support cognitive function and general vitality in the elderly, which can be loosely associated with age-related conditions such as Alzheimer's disease. However, the traditional use is not specifically targeted at treating "Alzheimer's disease" as defined by modern medicine, but rather at alleviating symptoms associated with aging, such as memory decline or cognitive impairment.
Scientific research on Lycium's effects in the context of Alzheimer's disease is limited and largely preclinical. A few animal studies have indicated that Lycium extracts may have neuroprotective effects, potentially reducing oxidative stress and amyloid-beta deposition, which are implicated in Alzheimer's pathology. Some in vitro studies also suggest antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and there is insufficient evidence to recommend Lycium as a treatment for Alzheimer's disease based on current scientific standards. Thus, its use is primarily rooted in tradition, with only preliminary scientific support.
