Magnesium taurate is a compound consisting of magnesium and taurine. The rationale for its use in Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is based on several lines of experimental evidence, though direct human studies are limited. Magnesium is essential for normal neuronal function, and deficiency has been implicated in neurodegenerative diseases, including AD. Animal studies have shown that magnesium supplementation can improve synaptic plasticity and cognitive function, potentially by reducing β-amyloid accumulation and neuroinflammation—key features in AD pathology. Taurine, meanwhile, has neuroprotective and antioxidant properties, and some preclinical studies have suggested that it may reduce tau hyperphosphorylation and amyloid toxicity.
The combination of magnesium and taurine in magnesium taurate is hypothesized to provide synergistic neuroprotective effects. However, while there are a few animal and in vitro studies supporting potential benefits, direct clinical trials in humans with Alzheimer's Disease are lacking as of 2024. Reviews of magnesium and taurine individually suggest possible roles in cognitive health, but robust evidence for magnesium taurate specifically as a treatment or preventative for AD is not yet available.
