Mulberry, particularly from the species Morus alba (white mulberry), has been investigated for its potential neuroprotective effects related to Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Scientific validation for its use comes primarily from preclinical studies, not from clinical trials in humans. In laboratory and animal studies, extracts of mulberry leaves, fruits, or bark have shown antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activities. These mechanisms are considered relevant in the context of AD, where oxidative stress, inflammation, and deficits in cholinergic neurotransmission contribute to disease pathology.

For example, studies in mice have reported that mulberry extract administration could improve learning and memory deficits induced by experimental models of AD, possibly through reduction of oxidative stress markers and inhibition of acetylcholinesterase. Some cell culture studies suggest mulberry compounds can protect neurons against amyloid-beta-induced toxicity. However, these promising effects have not yet been confirmed in high-quality human trials, and the bioactive compounds responsible (such as flavonoids and polyphenols) may have low bioavailability.
