Tea, particularly green tea (Camellia sinensis), has been the subject of scientific research regarding its potential role in supporting cognitive function and possibly slowing the progression of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). The interest stems largely from certain bioactive compounds in tea, such as catechins (notably epigallocatechin-3-gallate, EGCG) and theanine, which have demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties in laboratory and animal studies. These mechanisms are relevant because oxidative stress and inflammation are implicated in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's Disease. Some epidemiological studies have found associations between regular tea consumption and a reduced risk of cognitive decline or dementia. For example, a few cohort studies in Asian populations suggest that tea drinkers may have a modestly lower risk of developing AD compared to non-tea drinkers. However, clinical trials in humans are limited, generally small in scale, and have produced mixed or inconclusive results regarding tea or its constituents’ ability to directly prevent or treat Alzheimer's Disease.
