Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Aletris, commonly known as "unicorn root," has a history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly within North American indigenous and 19th-century eclectic medical practices. It was traditionally used for various "female complaints," including amenorrhea (absence of menstruation), dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), and general uterine weakness. Herbalists believed Aletris could "tone" the uterus and normalize menstrual cycles, often including it in multi-herb formulas for gynecological issues. However, these uses are based on empirical tradition rather than rigorous scientific investigation.

There is a lack of high-quality scientific studies or clinical trials evaluating Aletris for amenorrhea or other menstrual disorders. No pharmacological mechanisms relevant to menstrual regulation have been reliably established for Aletris farinosa or related species. Modern herbal references occasionally mention Aletris in the context of historical use, but generally caution that its efficacy is unproven by contemporary research standards. Therefore, while its use for amenorrhea is well documented in traditional herbal medicine, scientific evidence for effectiveness is minimal to nonexistent.
