For the health condition: Amenorrhea
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Angelica (commonly Angelica sinensis, also known as Dong Quai) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for female reproductive health, including the treatment of amenorrhea (absence of menstruation). In TCM, Angelica is often referred to as the "female ginseng" and is believed to nourish and invigorate the blood, regulate menstruation, and relieve menstrual pain. Traditional herbal formulas for amenorrhea frequently include Angelica as a key ingredient, often in combination with other herbs. The rationale is based on the herb's purported ability to promote blood circulation and balance hormonal activity according to TCM theory.
However, scientific research directly supporting the use of Angelica for amenorrhea is limited. Most studies involving Angelica focus on its general effects on women's reproductive health, such as alleviating menopausal symptoms or dysmenorrhea, rather than specifically addressing amenorrhea. While Angelica contains phytoestrogens and other compounds that may have mild estrogenic or uterotonic effects in vitro or in animal studies, clinical trials in humans for amenorrhea are lacking. Thus, while the use of Angelica for amenorrhea is justified by tradition and historical practice, robust scientific validation is currently insufficient.
