Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is primarily used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for a variety of health concerns, including reproductive health and menstrual disorders such as amenorrhea (absence of menstruation). In Ayurvedic texts, ashwagandha is classified as a “rasayana” or rejuvenative tonic, believed to support vitality, hormonal balance, and stress adaptation. Amenorrhea is often linked in Ayurveda to imbalances in the doshas (bodily energies), particularly Vata, and ashwagandha is considered effective for pacifying Vata and promoting regular menstrual cycles.

Despite its long-standing use in traditional medicine, scientific research specifically examining ashwagandha’s effects on amenorrhea is sparse. Some modern studies suggest ashwagandha may help reduce stress and balance hormones such as cortisol, which could theoretically influence menstrual health indirectly, since stress and hormonal imbalances are known causes of amenorrhea. However, robust clinical trials directly assessing ashwagandha’s efficacy for restoring menstruation in amenorrheic women are lacking.

In summary, ashwagandha’s use for amenorrhea is largely based on traditional practice rather than strong scientific validation. While its adaptogenic and potential hormone-modulating properties provide a plausible mechanism, more research is needed to confirm its effectiveness for this condition.
