Asoka (Saraca asoca) is a well-known medicinal plant in Ayurvedic medicine, traditionally used to manage various gynecological disorders, including amenorrhea (absence of menstruation). In Ayurvedic texts like the Charaka Samhita and Ashtanga Hridaya, Asoka is described as a stree roga (women’s diseases) remedy, believed to help regulate the menstrual cycle and alleviate symptoms associated with menstrual irregularities. Formulations such as Ashokarishta, which contains Asoka bark as a key ingredient, are commonly prescribed for amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, and menorrhagia within traditional practice.

However, scientific validation for Asoka’s efficacy specifically in treating amenorrhea is limited. Some preclinical studies suggest that extracts of Asoka may exhibit estrogenic activity and influence the female reproductive system, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. The majority of evidence supporting Asoka’s use for amenorrhea comes from anecdotal reports, case series, and traditional usage rather than rigorous scientific research. As a result, while Asoka remains a popular traditional remedy for amenorrhea in Ayurveda, its use is not strongly supported by high-quality modern scientific evidence.
