Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Curcuma wenyujin, known as "Ezhu" (莪术) in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), is primarily used based on traditional practices for the treatment of amenorrhea. In TCM, amenorrhea (the absence of menstruation) is often attributed to "blood stasis" or obstruction in the flow of qi and blood. Ezhu is characterized as a herb that activates blood circulation, dispels blood stasis, and alleviates pain. It is often included in classical TCM herbal formulas for gynecological disorders like amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, and abdominal masses.

Historical texts such as the "Ben Cao Gang Mu" (Compendium of Materia Medica) and "Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing" reference the use of Curcuma species for promoting menstrual flow and resolving blood stasis. Contemporary TCM pharmacopeias continue to list Ezhu as a remedy for amenorrhea of the "blood stasis" type.

However, there is limited high-quality scientific evidence directly supporting the efficacy of Curcuma wenyujin for amenorrhea specifically. Most modern pharmacological research focuses on its anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and circulatory effects, which align with its traditional use in promoting blood flow, but clinical trials for amenorrhea are lacking. Therefore, its use for this condition is justified primarily by tradition, with some pharmacological plausibility but limited direct scientific validation.
