Evidence supporting the use of: Dwarf lilyturf
For the health condition: Amenorrhea
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Dwarf lilyturf (Ophiopogon japonicus), known as "Mai Men Dong" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has been historically used for a variety of conditions, primarily as an herb to nourish yin, moisten dryness, and treat coughs and throat issues. Its use for amenorrhea (the absence of menstruation) is not prominent in classical Chinese herbal texts; however, it may occasionally appear in multi-herb formulas aimed at nourishing body fluids and blood, which are sometimes implicated in TCM diagnoses of amenorrhea. There is very limited traditional justification for its use specifically for amenorrhea, and it is not a primary herb for this condition in TCM. Furthermore, there is no credible scientific evidence or clinical research supporting the use of dwarf lilyturf for amenorrhea. Most modern pharmacological studies focus on its anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, and antidiabetic properties rather than gynecological uses. In summary, while dwarf lilyturf may be included in some traditional formulas that address the underlying patterns associated with amenorrhea in TCM theory, its direct use for amenorrhea is minimally supported by tradition and not at all by science.
