Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda. In these traditions, licorice is often used as part of multi-herbal formulas to help regulate menstruation and address amenorrhea (absence of menstruation). The rationale is typically based on licorice’s reputed abilities to harmonize hormonal function and reduce stress, which are considered contributing factors to menstrual irregularities in traditional frameworks.

However, the scientific evidence for licorice’s effectiveness in treating amenorrhea specifically is very limited. Some studies suggest licorice root has weak phytoestrogenic activity and can influence cortisol metabolism, which could theoretically impact the menstrual cycle. Licorice has also been used in combination with peony (as in the traditional Chinese formula "Shakuyaku-kanzo-to") for conditions involving menstrual dysfunction, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), but high-quality clinical trials on amenorrhea itself are lacking. Any observed benefits are mostly anecdotal or part of broader syndrome management rather than amenorrhea alone.

Overall, while licorice is traditionally used for women's health and menstrual issues, there is insufficient direct scientific evidence to support its use specifically for amenorrhea. Care should also be taken due to the herb’s potential side effects, especially with long-term or high-dose use.
