For the health condition: Amenorrhea
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Placenta has been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in East Asian practices such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), to support women's reproductive health, including conditions like amenorrhea (absence of menstruation). In TCM, human or animal placenta (commonly called "zi he che") is considered to have properties that nourish blood and tonify the kidney and liver, organs believed to be involved in menstrual regulation. It is often prescribed in complex herbal formulas for various gynecological issues, including amenorrhea, infertility, and fatigue. However, scientific validation for the use of placenta in treating amenorrhea is minimal. Most available evidence consists of anecdotal reports or small, non-randomized studies, often lacking rigorous controls or sufficient sample sizes. While some research has attempted to identify bioactive compounds in placenta (such as hormones, growth factors, or cytokines), there is no robust clinical data demonstrating that oral or injected placenta preparations effectively restore menstruation or treat underlying causes of amenorrhea in humans. Thus, use of placenta for amenorrhea is justified mainly by tradition, not by scientific evidence.
