Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Achyranthes, particularly Achyranthes aspera, is primarily used in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani to support the management of various health conditions, including anal fistula and fissure. In Ayurvedic texts, Achyranthes aspera (commonly known as "Apamarga") is mentioned as a component in formulations (notably "Kshara" preparations) used for "Ksharasutra" therapy, a minimally invasive treatment for anal fistula and fissures. The plant is valued for its purported anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties, which are considered beneficial in these conditions. However, the scientific evidence supporting its efficacy is limited. Some preclinical studies have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties of Achyranthes aspera extracts, but direct clinical studies on its effectiveness in treating anal fistula or fissure are scarce. Most of the available evidence is anecdotal and based on traditional usage rather than robust clinical trials. Therefore, while the traditional basis for its use exists, high-quality scientific validation is lacking, and the strength of evidence is modest.
