Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Kachnar (Bauhinia variegata) is primarily used in Ayurvedic and traditional Indian medicine for a variety of health conditions, including those affecting the digestive and excretory systems. The use of Kachnar in the management of anal fistula and fissure is mainly supported by traditional texts and practices rather than robust scientific studies. Classical Ayurvedic formulations such as "Kachnar Guggulu" are recommended for conditions involving inflammation, abnormal tissue growth, and wound healing, which may indirectly relate to the management of fistula-in-ano and anal fissures. The rationale is largely based on the herb’s purported anti-inflammatory, astringent, and wound-healing properties, which are described in Ayurvedic pharmacopeia and some ethnobotanical references. However, there is very limited modern clinical research directly evaluating Kachnar’s efficacy for anal fistula or fissure. Most available scientific studies focus on its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects in general, but not specifically in the context of anorectal disorders. As such, while traditional usage provides a basis for its inclusion in herbal management of these conditions, the quality and quantity of scientific evidence remain weak. Therefore, its use is justified more by tradition than by rigorous scientific validation.
