5-methyltetrahydrofolate glucosamine (5-MTHF glucosamine) is a bioavailable form of folate, the naturally occurring form of vitamin B9. Folate is essential for DNA synthesis and cellular replication, particularly in rapidly dividing cells such as those in the bone marrow responsible for producing red blood cells. Folate deficiency is a well-established cause of megaloblastic anemia, a condition characterized by the production of abnormally large and immature red blood cells. Supplementation with folate (including 5-MTHF) can correct this deficiency and resolve the anemia.
5-MTHF is the predominant form of folate circulating in human plasma and does not require further metabolic activation, in contrast to synthetic folic acid, which must be converted via several enzymatic steps. Individuals with certain genetic polymorphisms (notably in the MTHFR gene) have reduced ability to convert folic acid to active folate, making 5-MTHF a preferred form for supplementation in these cases. Clinical studies and professional guidelines recognize folate supplementation as standard therapy for folate-deficiency anemia, and 5-MTHF is considered effective in this context (De Wals et al., 2007; Scaglione & Panzavolta, 2014).
While most evidence is based on folic acid, 5-MTHF has demonstrated equivalent or superior efficacy, and may avoid potential unmetabolized folic acid accumulation. Therefore, the use of 5-MTHF glucosamine to prevent or treat folate deficiency anemia is scientifically justified, with robust evidence supporting its efficacy in this regard.
