The use of Angelica (particularly Angelica sinensis, also known as Dong Quai) for treating or supporting anemia is primarily rooted in traditional Chinese medicine. Historically, Dong Quai has been used as a "female tonic," believed to nourish the blood and support circulation, especially in women experiencing menstrual disorders or postpartum weakness. In traditional practices, it is frequently included in herbal formulas designed to "tonify" or enrich the blood, and it is sometimes recommended as an adjunct to address symptoms associated with anemia such as fatigue or pallor.
Scientific investigations into Angelica's efficacy for anemia are limited and not robust. Some studies suggest that components in Angelica may have hematopoietic effects (supporting the formation of blood cells) or contain compounds such as ferulic acid, which might mildly stimulate erythropoiesis (red blood cell production).
