Baobab (Adansonia digitata) has a long history of traditional use in Africa, where various parts of the tree, especially its fruit pulp and leaves, are consumed as food and for medicinal purposes. In the context of anemia, the primary rationale for its traditional use stems from its relatively high content of vitamin C and certain minerals such as iron. Local communities have often used baobab fruit pulp as a dietary supplement for pregnant women and children, groups that are particularly vulnerable to anemia. Vitamin C is known to enhance the absorption of non-heme iron from plant sources, which may indirectly help in improving iron status.
However, scientific validation for baobab's efficacy in treating or preventing anemia is limited. Some laboratory and nutritional analyses have confirmed the presence of vitamin C and modest amounts of iron in baobab fruit and leaves, but clinical trials investigating its direct effect on anemia in humans are scarce.
