Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Blue-green algae, particularly species such as Spirulina, have been studied for their potential to support or treat anemia, primarily due to their high content of iron and certain vitamins (like vitamin B12, though the B12 form in Spirulina may not be bioavailable to humans). Several small clinical studies have evaluated the effects of Spirulina supplementation in populations with anemia, including pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses. Some of these studies have reported improvements in hemoglobin levels and reductions in anemia prevalence after Spirulina supplementation, likely attributed to its iron content and possible enhancement of iron absorption.

However, the overall quality and size of these studies are modest, with some methodological limitations such as small sample sizes, short duration, and lack of blinding. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses acknowledge a potential benefit but stress that the current evidence base is insufficient for strong clinical recommendations. The World Health Organization and mainstream medical guidelines do not currently recommend blue-green algae as a primary treatment for anemia. Thus, while there is some scientific validation for its supportive role, particularly in populations with limited dietary iron, the evidence is limited and does not support use as a replacement for established anemia treatments.
