Bok choy (Brassica rapa subsp. chinensis) is sometimes recommended as a dietary aid for anemia, primarily due to its iron content and the presence of other nutrients that support red blood cell production. However, the scientific evidence supporting its use as a primary or significant treatment for anemia is limited. Bok choy is a non-heme (plant-based) iron source, providing approximately 0.8 mg of iron per 100 grams. While this contributes to dietary iron intake, non-heme iron is less efficiently absorbed compared to heme iron from animal sources. Bok choy also contains vitamin C, which can enhance the absorption of non-heme iron when consumed together. Scientific literature recognizes that increasing overall dietary iron—especially with vitamin C-rich foods—can help prevent or address mild iron deficiency. However, no clinical trials or robust studies specifically demonstrate bok choy's efficacy as a treatment for anemia. Most recommendations are extrapolated from the known nutritional content and general dietary approaches for anemia. Therefore, while bok choy can be a useful component of a balanced, iron-rich diet, it should not be relied upon as a standalone therapy for anemia, especially moderate to severe cases. Use of bok choy for anemia is justified more by its nutritional profile than by direct scientific validation as a treatment.
