Bovine liver has a long-standing history of use in treating anemia, and its efficacy is supported by scientific evidence. The liver is one of the richest natural sources of bioavailable heme iron, which is the type of iron most readily absorbed and utilized by the human body. It also contains significant amounts of vitamin B12 and folate, both of which are essential for red blood cell formation and the prevention of certain types of anemia, such as megaloblastic anemia.

Scientific validation for the use of liver in anemia dates back to the early 20th century. In the 1920s, George Minot and William Murphy discovered that feeding liver to patients with pernicious anemia led to dramatic clinical improvements. This discovery was so significant that it earned them (and George Whipple, who conducted related animal studies) the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1934. Their work laid the foundation for understanding the role of vitamin B12 in red blood cell production.

Modern nutritional science continues to support the use of bovine liver as a dietary intervention for iron deficiency anemia, especially in cases where dietary intake of iron, B12, or folate is inadequate. However, supplementation should be approached with caution due to the high vitamin A content of liver. In summary, bovine liver's use for anemia is both historically and scientifically justified.
